HOLY EMPTY VOID

So yeah, sorry. It's been two months. Not too much has happened those two months, so I was embarrased to update you on the temper tantrums, veggie dog throwing and snot extracting that is my life.

Well, here is what's new: I've stopped throwing up. Now I just have a vague, indigestiony, there-is-a-four-limbed-creature-in-my-stomach feeling that casts a heartburny omnipresence over each of my days.

We are having another girl. I have to say: I was OK with anything. Really, I like the thought of two sisters. But when they told us, Kev's "yeah" skipped a beat. Then, over the next few days, he slowly lets out that he was looking forward to watching football with a son. I feel guilty. But it's not like I could eat snips and snails and puppy dog tails to make it happen, right?

The thing is that two girls is absolutely perfect for Kev. He's such a good dad and has a soft spot for little girls (what dad doesn't?). And, he's always had a hard time relating to males. Dad left family when he was in utero, he met him once when he was 8, had a step-dad for a while who gave him pot for Christmas, step-dad left, etc., etc. Maybe a son would have been Kev's chance to heal all that. Who knows? My stomach hurts.

Also, I've started walking a lot. We live so close to the beach that I can get there in about 2 minutes. But I get bored easily, so we will see how long this lasts. Beauty is boring if you look at it everyday. But there is this one thing that makes the walk worth it: there's this big rock set in the ocean where seagulls congregate. One ambitious paper-machier with a sense of humor creates these ridiculous sculptures and perches them up on the rock to amuse and mystify the birds. The most recent monolith is a huge green pterodactyl with a cape and flag held in its mouth. The way the seagulls cluster around this thing and gape up at it like watching the Aztecs worship their sun god. It's silly. I tremendously enjoy silly.

Also, we are having a holiday party. All that ocean air and bird ridiculousity surely made me insane. I can barely pull dinner together three nights a week and now I will be hosting dozens of hungry folks. And I hate to clean. I must call it off.

So Alexa. Is cute. I think she is growing into a Little Debbie. She loves Monsters, Inc. (thanks to my spooky movie appreciation gene). She fakes injuries and sickness to get attention. She never looks where she is going. She eats long after she is full.
This ought to be fun. Kevin will need to stage a gene transplant intervention.

Other updates. Hmm. Let's see. Well OK...I'll tell you b/c I can't keep secrets. But I don't want to bring you down or anything. Baby-to-be's heartbeat is irregular. They found it on ultrasound last week. So pray or think good thoughts if you will. I go back on Thursday for a monitoring appointment. Hopefully, it's just one of those things.

Oh! And we painted our walls. Let me just advise: trust your instincts! Do not let a designer tell you what color to paint your walls when you know perfectly well that you want the dining nook to be red and not molten bronze. Because molten bronze turns out to be jack-o-lantern orange and you can do nothing with that color except paint a big black smiley face on it and call it a day.

tim:

It was MY comment that guilted you over the edge wasn't it!? ;-) I ended up with two girls after always assuming I would have a son. We debated trying a third time, but ended up realizing we were way too old and tired for the two we have. Somedays I daydream about having a cute tiny replica of the adorable little boy that I was ;-) but then I think he would have probably ended up a terror that looked like the other side of the family anyway! In the end it seems it was meant to be how it turned out. Good luck with the monitoring appointment.
