ELUSIVE SPIRIT

I suffer from this every year. I don't feel Christmas. Since I moved to California, Christmas to me is like that homicidal elf from The Christmas Story pushing kids down the slide after their brief visit with the fake Santa Claus.

Everything is too rushed, too manic, too hysterical this time of year. The freeways, the malls, the parties. Too much collapsed into too short a time.

All I know is that now that I have a daughter, I better find a way to feel this season. I don't want to do to her what my dad did. He curmudgeoned his way through the holidays...and his frustration and impatience left its residue.

Wow. Insight. I've never considered that before...
It just came out as I was writing. Must rename this blog "Debbie Does Freud."
